What is the strength of a NdFeB magnet?

2024-09-12

The strength of a NdFeB magnet (Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnet) is characterized by its high magnetic properties, particularly its maximum energy product (denoted as BHmax), which is a measure of the magnet’s strength. NdFeB magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnets available today. Below are the key metrics that define the strength of NdFeB magnets:

1. Magnetic Field Strength (Br) - Remanence:

  - Br represents the magnetic flux density of the magnet when fully magnetized and is typically in the range of 1.0 to 1.4 Tesla (T).

  - This means that NdFeB magnets have very strong magnetic fields compared to other types of magnets like ferrite or Alnico.

2. Maximum Energy Product (BHmax):

  - The BHmax is the most commonly used measure of a magnet’s strength, expressed in Mega-Gauss Oersteds (MGOe).

  - For NdFeB magnets, BHmax typically ranges from 28 to 52 MGOe. This is significantly higher than other permanent magnets, making NdFeB magnets ideal for applications requiring compact size and high strength.

3. Coercivity (Hc):

  - The coercivity is the resistance of the magnet to being demagnetized and is usually in the range of 10 to 30 kOe (kilo-Oersted) for NdFeB magnets.

  - This high coercivity means that NdFeB magnets are not easily demagnetized, even in the presence of external magnetic fields or high temperatures (although their performance decreases with temperature).

4. Pull Force:

  - The pull force is the amount of force required to remove the magnet from a ferromagnetic surface.

  - NdFeB magnets have extremely high pull forces, which can range from a few pounds (for small magnets) to hundreds or even thousands of pounds (for larger magnets).

5. Demagnetization Curve:

  - NdFeB magnets have a strong demagnetization resistance, meaning they maintain their magnetic properties well, even under substantial external forces.

Summary:

- Remanence (Br): 1.0 to 1.4 Tesla (T)

- Maximum Energy Product (BHmax): 28 to 52 MGOe

- Coercivity (Hc): 10 to 30 kOe

- Pull Force: Extremely high, depending on size and shape

These characteristics make NdFeB magnets the strongest commercially available magnets, ideal for use in a wide range of applications such as motors, generators, sensors, and electronics.
